4. “Angelheart, Ravenheart (Act 1: Before the Bleeding Sun)” by Eternal Tears of Sorrow
Submitted by bad bunny
Vocals: I’m gonna be honest, the initial narrating vocals amused me a bit. I wish he just growled instead throughout the whole thing… The chorus singing was very beautiful and added to the atmosphere of the track, though. (3.3)
Composition/Feelings: Again, I’ve heard this track once since I’ve heard this album as a whole before, but I didn’t remember it in its entirety so no point deduction for you. The orchestral instrumentation is absolutely perfect and dramatic, just my style. Great guitar solo, and this is coming from someone who doesn’t usually care for guitar solos. I’m a bit apathetic to the lyrics, gonna be honest. Trying to analyze it reminds me of poetry class, and while I liked that class more than others I really don’t want to think of school right now. However, I’d listen to it again just due to sound alone. (5)
Overall: 8.3/10
3. “Obfuscation” by Between the Buried and Me
Submitted by VelvetNoise
Vocals: Pretty standard growls without much variety. They are indeed good growls, though. (3.3)
Composition/Feelings: Here’s another album that I’ve heard entirely, but since I don’t remember the song on its own, I’m not removing points (lucky you). Anyway, I’ve always respected BTBAM for their instrumentation. I’ve seen so many annoying fanboys of this band but I understand why they exist, they’re just super good at their brand of wacky progressive metalcore. They’re sort of like Erra in terms of being “organized chaos” but WAY more along the lines of chaos. And I love that about them. Sometimes I don’t understand why they do certain things though, like that section from 2:31 to 2:49. I don’t like that part; it’s light, but not in a good way. They have other good breaks though, like the one beginning at 4:00. (5.2)
Overall: 8.5/10
2. “Limousine” by Brand New
Submitted by .
Vocals: Just so full of emotion. I don’t really know what more to say other than that. There wasn’t much he could do except deliver these lyrics the best he (3.2)
Composition/Feelings: I knew that Brand New are amazing songwriters. I’ve heard The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me as an album a couple of times before, but never remembered any individual songs (hence why you get no deduction), just the album as a whole. I don’t think I can listen to it again without feeling sick, but this song is fantastic. Things rarely make me feel sad when I can’t relate, but this one fucking hits me hard. If I were less dead inside I would cry. Also, it’s intriguing how they wrote the lyrics in both perspectives of the accident. The instrumentation is so dark and moving too, and how the guitars basically go crazy in the end matched my mood at that time. Damn. (5.4)
Overall: 8.6/10
1. “Colossus” by Idles
Submitted by kito
Vocals: To me, a lot of songs have vocals that just really stand out above the instrumentation. This time, they’re not really a prominent piece of the song in my opinion, more like an instrument that simply delivers the lyrics. I appreciate all the emotions he puts in here, especially at around 3:19 in the “it’s coming” section. I also love how he sounds in that punky part in the end. I appreciate him putting homophobes in coffins and based on his performance I believe he would do that. (3.5)
Composition/Feelings: I’m not completely sure what genre this is, but I really dig the style. The progression is really strong and it tells a story, which is something I hear more often in country/folk genres rather than something edgy like this. I love how it slowly speeds up, playing with tempos throughout, to match the life story. As an emo fuck I get energy from artists doing autobiographical stuff like this in a brutally honest way, and these guys did spectacular. It’s in my liked tracks now. (5.2)
